The place of the stupa was on the ancient trade route from Tibet which enters the Kathmandu Valley. Tibetan traders rested here and prayed for many centuries. When Tibetian refugees entered Nepal from Tibet in the 1950s, many decided to settle around Boudhanath and now have a majority of them.

Reconstruction of the damage caused by the 2015 earthquake has now been completed. But after a nationwide lockdown due to the COVID-19 epidemic, the stupa has not been allowed to go up to this date.
