About Bhoto Jatra

According to a legend about Bhoto Jatra, a couple of snakes lived in Toudah in the Kathmandu Valley. That king of snakes was a pair of Karkotak snakes. Once Nagini's eye got sick. While searching for vaidya to treat Nagini's eyes, the king snake came to know that there was a well-known Jyapu vaidya in Bhaktapur. Karkotak Nag went to look for Jyapu Vaidya. The snake told Jyapu vaidya that Nagini's eye was sick. Jyapu Vaidya accepted Nag's request. Both reached Toudah. The jyapu vaidya made herbal ointment and applied it to Nagini's eyes. Her eyes healed. Nag Nagini was very happy and gave many awards to Jyapu Vaidya. The award also included a glittering Bhoto with a variety of gems. Jyapu Vaidya used to walk around wearing that Bhoto.

The ghost was greedy to see such a good Bhoto of Jyapu. When Jyapu took out the Bhoto and started digging the field, the ghost secretly stole the Bhoto. Immediately, Jyapu Vaidya followed the ghost. He could not catch the ghost. Before that, it was customary to pull rato Machhindranath chariot in Patan. At this time, when rato Machhindranath chariot was pulled and brought to Jawalakhel, the people of the valley and ghosts also came to see the procession. Jyapu went there to see if the ghost of stealing Bhoto would also come on the procession. The ghost came to see the procession wearing a glittering Bhoto. He would disappear when he saw that ghost. At last, Vaidya grabbed the ghost's arm from behind. He asked the ghost for his Bhoto. The ghost did not back Bhoto. There was a big fight between the two. King Gunakamdev also came there to visit Machhindranath and see the procession. After a great quarrel between the two, the king's officials brought him before the king.

Jyaphu Vaidya said that the ghost stole the Bhoto given by the Karkotak snake to the king. The ghost told the king that he had found Bhoto in the cornfield. Gunakamdev is a just and pious king, It is believed that they have requested to keep the priest of Machhindranathnath as Bhoto Naso until a decision is sought from both of them. For proof, Jyapu Vaidya reached the shores of Toudah and met Karkot Nag. Nag said that he would come as a human being to witness the Machhindranath procession wearing white clothes. "When I come, there will be a storm. I will also look taller than others,” said Karkotak Nag. At that time, it had been three days since Machhindranath's chariot arrived at Jawalakhel. Jyapu came to Jawalakhel in time hoping to get Bhoto. King Gunakamdev also came there. The wind blew for a while, but the vaidya could not identify the tallest man in the crowd. The king ordered to show from all four corners of the rato Machhindranath chariot whose Bhoto it was, but it is still believed in Nepal that no one came forward to take the Bhoto with witness evidence. This is the longest chariot procession in the Kathmandu Valley. Devotees from all three cities of the Kathmandu Valley used to come to Patan to see this procession.
